Shoothing a photo is always a dialogue: what you see in the person in front and what he wants you to see. It is important for everything to be honest. Even if excogitate, It should come out of what the person posses truly. 
You can slightly accentuate or carry it to the point of absurdity. Let the person laugh if he feels like. If he wants a fairy tale it should be felt in process like it is right in your hands. 

If the person feels no good it's better to throw out those emotions for the camera, step over and walk out the photo session with plans for future but not painful memories.

People do not pose, they live the moment. and at that moment they are much more honest, much more beautiful and much more interesting than they think they are.
